When The Night Falls (2025)

60cm Diameter x 2cm/23.6" × 0.8"
Acrylic & gouache on wood, sealed with a matt varnish

When the Night Falls is a contemplative exploration of atmosphere, memory, and intuition. Inspired by the evocative mood of late night jazz and noir soundscapes, the piece unfolds through layers of deep indigo and midnight blue, punctuated by delicate white linework that appears to shimmer like patterns revealed in moonlight. Accents of burnt orange and soft peach emerge throughout the composition, blooming like nocturnal flowers against the darkness and inviting the viewer into a dreamlike, moonlit garden.

Unlike many of my works, this piece began without a predetermined concept or destination. Created during a quiet evening in my new studio, with the company of my husband and the warm hum of jazz drifting through the space, the painting emerged entirely through instinct. Rather than directing the process, I allowed the work to reveal itself, responding only to colour, movement, and feeling.

The resulting composition captures a sense of suspended time - a fleeting moment between reality and imagination. There is a romance to its palette and a stillness within its forms, reminiscent of wandering through a garden after dark, when familiar landscapes become mysterious and enchanting.

When the Night Falls represents a turning point in my creative practice - a conscious surrender of expectation. By releasing the need for the work to become anything specific, I was able to create from a place of complete freedom and presence. The painting unfolded organically, becoming not only an artwork, but a record of trust in the creative process itself.
